CUSTOMS PROCEDURES

Payment

Where the buyer and seller are comparatively unknown to one another, the seller will generally require that a letter of credit be issued from the buyer's bank. Documentary collections are also used for paying for shipment after the fact. Like the letter of credit, they require presentation of the commercial invoice and the bill of lading or airway bill as proof that shipment has been made. While they don't carry the same guarantees of payment as the letter of credit, they do insure the buyer doesn't get his goods until payment is made. Foreign funds transfers can also be used to pay for goods, particularly when a supplier may demand partial payment in advance of shipping.
