Guinea is a member of the two foremost international conventions on international intellectual property protection: the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property and the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works. The Paris Convention covers patents, trademarks and unfair competition, while the Berne Convention deals specifically with copyrights. Guinea works closely with the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI), the regional Yaounde-based patent organization for French-speaking Africa, as well as with UNIDO, to ensure compliance with standard patent laws. Guinea is a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Enforcement of protection of intellectual property rights, however, is left to the still-reforming Guinean court system. We know of no intellectual property case yet treated by the court system. There are no specific mechanisms in place to protect proprietary information or trade secrets.
