Guinea protests leave 3 dead, 20 wounded

Conakry, Guinea: Clashes between security forces and protesters calling for Guinea's president to step down left three people dead and 20 wounded Saturday, state radio said.

The violence was reported in the southeastern town of N'Zerekore, one of several towns the strikes have spread to from the capital, Conakry, where security forces also detained nearly 100 people, the radio reported.

Pressure is growing against ailing 72-year-old president Lansana Conte to relinquish power and make way for a new transitional government. Conte seized power in a 1984 coup.

The strike began Jan. 10 after Conte halted the trial of two men accused of stealing millions of dollars (euros) from the state, but union leaders have since banded together and say the strike will not end until Conte leaves office.
