Guinea has considerable maritime resources, including shrimp, lobster, and several species of fish that can be extracted from the ocean both for local consumption and for export, The World Bank estimates that Guinea's annual ocean fisheries potential exceeds 200,000 metric tons. Coastal surveillance initiatives, however, have not yet been successfully implemented, and overfishing and illegal fishing continues to undermine efforts toward systematic exploitation of these rich coastal waters.
Annual output is estimated to contribute about 1.5 percent to GDP, divided equally between domestic and export sales. Since 1990, several commercial fishing ventures have been established, including shrimp farming, development of privately held cold storage facilities in 14 of the country's 33 prefectures, and several small commercial fisheries trade ventures. The Guinean government's office for the promotion of artisanal fisheries since 1990 has established several small-scale commercial fishing ventures and several artisanal fishing ports in Conkary. Domestic artisanal fishermen exploit about one-eighth of the estimated potential yield.
